Fall Roofing Inspection Checklist
Keeping up with roof maintenance in the fall
Summer is over and now it’s time for your fall roof inspection. In North Carolina, it is important to make sure your home’s roof was 1) able to endure the extreme temperatures found in our area during the summer months, and 2) is ready to take on the challenges of heavy precipitation and the windy fall weather.
As a homeowner, you should be visually inspecting your roof at least four times a year, and the best way to remember this schedule is to give your roof a visual inspection at the change of every season. At TruBlue Roofing and Remodeling, we want to help with the inspection process, so we created a simple and convenient checklist to make life easier.
It is important to note that when you do a personal visual inspection of the roof it should be done from the safety of the ground, through a window, or on a sturdy ladder.
Gutters and Debris:
- Clean all debris off roof
- Dirt
- Rocks
- Branches
- Leaves
- Clear gutters and check functionality
- Remove leaves from gutters
- Remove leaves that collect near the gutters
- Think about installing a gutter guard
- Examine the drain system for damage and debris
- Check downspouts for debris
Preventative Tree Work:
- Clear overhanging trees located near your roof
- Remove all branches that could penetrate the roof’s surface
- Trim back all low lying branches near your home
- Trim back branches that may come in contact with your roof with high winds
- Contact a professional tree service for tree trimming and removal if the job is too big
General Inspection Items:
- Check the quality of the roofing materials (shingles, bald spots, loss of granule, or severe curling)
- Check the flashing on the roof (properly flashed, sealed and watertight)
- Examine the roof for any holes, cracks, and open areas exposed to the elements
- Check for leaks and deterioration of roofing materials
- Look for signs of rotting fascia and trim
- Look for mildew, mold, fungus/moss growth, and rot
- Look for rust and damaged elements on the roof
- Visually inspect the chimney, vents, pipes, and skylights
Interior Inspection:
- Examine the interior of your home through the attic and crawl space
- Look for leaks and water damage
- Inspect your home’s insulation for damage and mold

The objectives of completing a quarterly roof inspections are:
- to determine if your roof system is performing according to its devised plan
- to identify signs of weakness, deterioration, or hazards
- to identify if there are needs for repair
With each interior and exterior examination/visual inspection, the hope is that you can develop a maintenance plan that is preventative and addresses any concerns in a timely manner.
