7 Things to Watch Out for with Your Roof

Blistering
Blisters are elevated sections on a shingle caused by poor ventilation. When moisture gets trapped within the shingle, it begins to pop and break through the surface to create an exposed spot. Small blisters are often considered part of the aging process, but if new shingles are blistering, it is a sign of either a manufacturing defect or poor roof ventilation.
Curling
Curling is when the asphalt shingles lift off the roof’s surface to create upturned corners. Curling is usually moisture and heat-related, but there are several reasons for asphalt shingles to curl.
- The shingles are near the end of their lifecycle and need to be replaced.
- Improper installation of the shingles is another reason for curling. Not enough nails, too many nails or the shingles not lined up appropriately are examples of improper installation.
- Poor attic ventilation can cause moisture buildup from rising hot air within your home, which can cause your shingles to curl and mold/mildew/algae to form.
- A multiple-layer roof can also cause curling— this is when a homeowner opts to lay a second layer of shingles on top of old ones. While that saves upfront costs, it is not the best option in the long run.
Cracking
Over the lifecycle of your shingles, there is a loss of volatile substances. Volatiles are chemicals with low boiling points that are added to the asphalt mix to make shingles flexible. Evaporation, moisture, and time can cause the volatiles to dry, shrink and crack. Shingle cracking is a natural part of the aging process, but if new shingles are cracking, it is a sign of either a manufacturing defect or poor roof ventilation.
Splitting
Shingles expand in warm temperatures and decrease in the cold. This fluctuation in size can cause the joints between the shingles to become stressed and reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive strips. Over time, this can cause the shingles to split, leading to leaks, and lower wind resistance.
Raising/Lifting
The number one reason behind raising asphalt shingles is improper installation. Shingles are secured tightly with nails, and if the roofer 1) did not use enough nails, 2) didn’t drive the nails entirely into the shingle or 3) didn’t place the shingle correctly, problems will arise. Strong winds and storms can also lift and tear shingles, resulting in leaks.
Raising can also occur due to improper ventilation of the attic space. If your home’s attic isn’t properly ventilated, then moisture can become trapped in the decking, which can cause mold to form. That mold will cause the shingles to curl and lift.
Missing Shingles
Shingles are installed on the roof one by one. Due to the installation process, individual shingles can become loose or unattached from the roof. Strong winds, a compromised seal or impact from a tree limb can cause a shingle to come away from the roof. If this happens, it is best to repair the area right away.
Granule Loss
Granules are added to the top layer of a shingle to provide color and to create a protective layer barrier prolonging the lifespan of the roof. The granules are finely crushed stone or ceramic that have a pigment and can come loose due to weathering and exposure to the elements. All roofs will experience some level of granule loss but if a large number are in your gutter, then there is a larger issue at play.
